Research training and support
Join our induction program for new Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to help you settle in to Swinburne. While you're studying, you'll have the opportunity to take part in training sessions, workshops, seminars and events. We are restructuring our training program which will be ready soon but below are some examples of what you could find in your faculty or offered centrally.
Training
We offer help with managing your research and writing your thesis through our Graduate Research Education and Training Program (GREAT). The sessions listed below are some examples of the training available.
Managing your degree
- Induction – Meet other students and colleagues and learn about policy and procedures, intellectual property, ethics, university services and what to expect your research degree journey
- Managing your supervisor – Discover effective strategies for working with your supervisor, including managing expectations, planning, feedback, and moving towards completion
- Qualitative research – what is it? – Learn about qualitative approaches to research, including theoretical perspectives, methodologies and methods
- Qualitative research approaches – Examine three qualitative research methods: case study work, phenomenography and naturalistic inquiry
- Presenting your research in public – Receive expert advice on how to present your research at progress reviews, conferences and meetings
- Preparing for examination – Learn about examination policies and processes and what examiners expect
- NVivo introduction – Learn about NVivo and the new features of the software.
Writing
- How to write a literature review – Discuss strategies and learn how to write a well-structured analytical literature review
- Thesis writing – What are the key elements of a thesis? Raise issues and concerns about writing your thesis including getting started, planning, procrastination and dealing with feedback
- Thesis writing boot camps – A two-day writing intensive opportunity
- Getting published – Learn about HERDC publications, ethical issues and authorship agreements and find out how you can publish from your research.
Statistics
- Fundamentals of statistics – Learn about basic statistical concepts and procedures
- Mplus – Applied structural equation modelling using Mplus
- SPSS – Introduction to SPSS, Multiple regression using SPSS, Survey methods and factor analysis using SPSS
- Amos – Introduction to structural equation modelling using Amos.
Student clubs
Swinburne PhD Club
The Swinburne PhD club is a place to raise awareness and drum up action for improving communication between the University and PhD students, strengthening ties with research masters and international graduate students who have plans in pursuing PhD in Swinburne. It is somewhere for PhD students to connect and build ties with other PhD students through formal and informal events such as:
- Fortnightly Bring Your Own Lunch (open discussion about research or personal matters)
- Monthly drinks in Hammer & Swine Bar
Student events
- Three Minute Thesis Competition – Students are asked to present their thesis in 3 minutes. Developed by The University of Queensland, the competition helps build your academic, presentation, and research communication skills.
